Lose Weight At The Dentist’s Office?
The DDS™ Appliance is the latest proven method for weight loss
without pills or surgery
New York, N.Y. — In the ever-growing weight-loss industry, which is estimated at $40 billion dollars, there is now a dental retainer that promises to help Americans fight the ‘battle of the bulge.’ Dr. Clifford Williams, a Manhattan cosmetic and restorative dentist, is one of the first dentists in the New York metro area who is certified to administer the DDS™ appliance. The DDS™ System, a small retainer-like apparatus manufactured by Scientific Intake, works on the premise that it makes people eat more slowly, therefore having them consume less food. "Obesity in America is on the rise and rivals cardiovascular disease as the leading cause of death. The BMI (Body Mass Index) level of Americans today has doubled over the past 15 years, and now more than ever, people are eating on the go and eating way too much," Dr. Williams states. Research conducted at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center at Louisiana State University has proven that those patients wearing the dental appliance on a given day consumed 25% less food than those who just ate regularly without the device.
The DDS™ appliance, a discreet mouthpiece that adheres to the upper palette of the mouth, is inserted each time you eat thus allowing only a certain portion of food to be chewed at a time. Dr. Williams states, "Since many people are constantly eating out and not taking the proper amount of time required to digest food, the satiety index (feeling of fullness) doesn’t kick in until it’s too late and the person’s overeaten." Normally, it takes the body at least 15 minutes to register with the brain that the stomach is full. "In actuality, this is a behavioral modification appliance. People have to be more aware of what and how much they are putting into their mouths," explains Dr. Williams.
Patients can receive their own customized retainer from dentists who have been trained in fitting the appliance for about $400-500 dollars. There are no adverse affects swallowing or speaking while wearing the device, and maintenance involves simply washing with water or lightly brushing with toothpaste.
