Periodontal Disease
Bad News: Periodontal disease is the major cause of tooth loss in adults.
Good News: Periodontal disease, if detected early, can have very successful treatment results.
What Is Periodontal Disease?
Periodontal disease affects the supporting structure of the teeth. One of the first signs is the bleeding of the swollen and reddish gum tissue. This stage is known as Gingivitis. This particular stage can be "reversible" with a professional prophylaxis and the patient performing meticulous oral hygiene technique. But, left untreated, this stage can continue on to an "irreversible" condition called Periodontitis.
Early Periodontitis occurs when the gum tissue is very inflamed and the underlying bone has slight breakdown.
Moderate Periodontitis is a more advanced stage of the above condition with increased destruction of gum tissue and more loss of bone support.

Refractory Progressive Periodontitis is a very advanced stage. The gum tissue is very loose and inflamed with varied amounts of bone loss and more pronounced mobility of the teeth. Since Periodontal Disease is our "silent enemy", it is important to have regular check-ups in order to monitor the patient.
